A five-step routine to avoid sharing incorrect AI information.

Editorial note: This is a practical educational guide, not a breaking-news report, paid ranking, or independent product test.

Step 1: Isolate the claim

Highlight a specific statement: a date, number, quotation, product feature or legal requirement. Vague summaries are harder to check than precise claims.

Step 2: Find an original source

Prefer primary material such as official product documentation, published research, government records, or a company’s own announcement. Do not assume a link supplied by AI is genuine until you open it.

Step 3: Match the wording

Read enough surrounding context to determine whether the source really supports the statement. Check publication dates, regions, version numbers and exceptions.

Step 4: Check high-impact claims again

When a mistake could affect money, safety, contracts or reputation, find an independent reliable source or consult a qualified professional.

Step 5: Publish with uncertainty noted

Keep supporting links and state what remains unverified. If information changes, correct the document instead of silently treating an earlier claim as permanent.
